Your Ratatan Journey

Five steps that take a brand-new player from the first four-beat command to the Episode 4 final boss.

Explore Ratatan Guides

Everything you need to march your Cobun army from Redo to The Everafter.

Ratatan Beginner Guide

Everything a first-time Ratatan player needs in one place: how the four-beat rhythm command window really works, why your Ratatan never swings a weapon, how the Melodium redirects your Cobun army, and which early mistakes waste an entire run.

Start Reading
1

Learn the rhythm command loop first. You move your Ratatan freely, but orders only land when you input them on the beat, so the real skill is deciding where to stand before you tap.

2

Understand your real damage source: Cobun do the fighting while your Ratatan positions, retreats and re-issues commands to keep the army facing the right way.

3

Turn on Welcome Mode if the first worlds feel punishing. It softens the early stages and reduces damage taken across repeated adventures, and it can be toggled at any time without changing the story.

4

Fix your timing before blaming the game. Input timing compensation lives under Options > Audio > Calibration and is the single biggest fix for players who feel their rhythm inputs drift.

5

After your first cleared run, set the Oath Level to 1 or higher in Goddess Games to unlock Episode 2, then raise the Oath Level by one each time to reach the next episode.

6

Spend early tokens on Ratatan Dock and Support Desk adventure upgrades rather than cosmetics, then equip the strongest weapon you own before pushing deeper.

Ratatan Bosses and Dark Ratatan

Attack patterns, phase events and safe damage windows for every major fight in Ratatan: all eight Dark Ratatan, the world mid-bosses and the Episode 4 final boss that unlocks the true ending in World 6.

Boss Dossiers

Ratatan Builds and Ratakaruta

Ratakaruta are the roguelike modifiers that define a run. This module breaks them down by element, explains how Elemental Force unlocks, and shows which combinations of Hustle Techs, normal attacks and crit effects survive a full four-episode climb.

Plan a Build

Fire

Burn-focused effects including Big Booms explosions, Spicy Guts attack scaling as HP drops, Spicy Guard damage reduction below half HP and Burning Dread forcing enemies to flee.

Water

Barrier scaling and MP sustain: Barrier Swell MP regen behind a barrier, Splash Barrier at battle start, Splash Barrier+ barrier strength, Whirlpool Shield and Raindrop Hop water orbs.

Ice

Survivability and burst: Chilly Challenge strength above 75% HP, Frigid Fury bonus damage to Frozen enemies, Macho Minuet max HP per boss defeated and Shatter Smash finishers.

Poison

Debuff stacking: Poison Punch and Toxic Hustle applying poison through normal attacks and Hustle Techs, Toxic Curse movement slows and Toxic Corruption defence reduction.

Lightning

The most consistent Elemental Force. Zap Strike and Hustle Zap apply Shock, Autocharge+ converts Shock into MP, and Bolt Boomer adds extra lightning bolt triggers.

Wind

Critical hit scaling: Whirlwind Strike critical chance on normal attacks, Hurricane Combo critical damage, Knockback Crusher and Hurricane Havoc Cobun crit trades.

Elemental Force

Hold two Ratakaruta of the same element to gain that element's Force effect, with a cap of three active Forces out of the six elements.

FEVER MODE

Staying on beat pushes the party into FEVER MODE, dynamically swapping the background music and sending your Cobun into a dance flurry; if the whole party hits it together the effect is bigger.

Super Fever Skill

A high-impact ability tied to FEVER state. v1.1.9 fixed an issue where using it in Advance Mode incorrectly decreased MP, and where falling off a platform mid-activation launched the Ratatan off-screen.

Ratatan Multiplayer and Crossplay

How Ratatan's online co-op actually behaves: room codes, platform invites, cross-play support per platform, which subscriptions you need on console, and why Welcome Mode is unavailable once a second player joins.

Play Together
1

Open the multiplayer menu and choose friend matchmaking, then share the room code with the players you want to bring in.

2

On Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S you can skip the code entirely and use your platform's own invitation feature to pull friends into the room.

3

Cross-play is supported between PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-platform support for the PlayStation 5 version is planned for the near future.

4

Console online play needs a subscription: Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2, PlayStation Plus on PS5, or an Xbox Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer.

5

There is no local split-screen co-op on a single system. Groups of up to four have to play online, and progress made in multiplayer still saves to each player's own save file.

6

Welcome Mode is disabled during co-op, so a struggling group should instead lean on Ratatan Dock and Support Desk upgrades and stronger weapon loadouts.

Ratatan Progression and Ratatan Dock

The meta layer between runs. Learn what the Ratatan Dock and Support Desk upgrades actually buy you, how Oath Levels gate each episode, and how to spend tokens so the grind compounds instead of stalling out.

Upgrade Smart
1

Prioritise adventure upgrades at the Ratatan Dock and Support Desk first; they are the difference between a wall and a clear when you keep dying on the same stage.

2

Set the Oath Level to 1 or higher in Goddess Games to unlock Episode 2, then raise it by one more for each subsequent episode.

3

Spend Goddess's Lottery pulls deliberately. From Episode 3 onward the altar pools change, so pulls made early are not wasted but do not carry the same value later.

4

Use Goddess's Altar risk-reward choices carefully; reducing maximum HP there interacts with barrier effects like Whirlpool Shield+ and has been the source of several fixed bugs.

5

Bank Goodie Gate pickups and suspend saves properly. 1.0 fixed cases where items already collected in a world could be re-obtained after resuming, and where Goodie Gate stopped working after a resume.

6

Two documented upgrade tracks, Lonely Dream and Lonely Hero, were bugged in earlier builds; both Ratatan Dock upgrades were corrected in v1.1.9.

Ratatan Story and World

The setting behind the marching: the world of Redo, the island of Rataport, the Goddess and The Everafter, the four episodes that carry the campaign to its ending, and the Patapon lineage that connects them.

Patch Notes

What is Ratatan?

Ratatan comes from TVT Co. Ltd. and Ratata Arts, the studio founded by members of the Patapon team, including original creator Hiroyuki Kotani. Instead of tapping drum beats on a fixed march, you steer your Ratatan freely across a side-scrolling battlefield and punch in rhythm commands on the beat to send Cobun charging, retreating or concentrating fire.

Four-Beat Rhythm Commands

You move freely and issue orders on the beat. Land the input inside the rhythm window and your Cobun respond instantly; miss it and the whole line hesitates.

Cobun Armies

Chorus become Cobun once a Ratatan gifts them a Medama. Each character reshapes the army, so your roster choice changes how a stage plays out.

Ratakaruta Stacking

Roguelike modifiers that define a run. Hold two of the same element to trigger an Elemental Force, capped at three active Forces out of six elements.

Online Co-op and Crossplay

Teams of up to four play online with room codes or platform invites, and cross-play covers Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S.

Each run sends you deeper into a world of episodic stages toward The Everafter, where the Goddess is said to live. Between runs you bank tokens into the Ratatan Dock, unlock higher Oath Levels to reach later episodes, and gamble Goddess's Lottery pulls for the Mythic weapons and Decorune that carry you through the eight assembled Dark Ratatan and the story's final boss. The full 1.0 release arrived on October 14, 2026 after roughly a year in Early Access, adding Episodes 3 and 4, World 6, the complete Dark Ratatan roster and new Mythic gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first in Ratatan?+

Finish the tutorial stages so the rhythm command window is explained, then immediately check Options, Audio and Calibration to fix your input timing before you blame the game for missed beats. Play your first runs on the default difficulty, learn how the Melodium redirects your Cobun line, and only after your first clear start spending tokens at the Ratatan Dock. Setting the Oath Level in Goddess Games unlocks Episode 2, so treat that as the real end of the tutorial rather than an optional extra.

How do Ratakaruta and Elemental Force work?+

Ratakaruta are the run-defining modifiers you pick up between stages. Hold two Ratakaruta of the same element and you gain that element's Force effect, and you can keep up to three active Forces at once out of the six available elements. Because the cap is three, most strong runs intentionally commit to two or three elements instead of collecting one of everything, and the Lightning Force is generally the most consistent because Shock application and Autocharge+ turn status effects into MP sustain.

How many bosses are in Ratatan and which is hardest?+

The 1.0 release assembled all eight Dark Ratatan, and each world also has mid-bosses such as Captain Barbatoid of the Paraddean Sea and Scorpswoosh Bill of Yeehawler Mountain. Episode 4 closes the arc with the final boss in World 6. Difficulty depends heavily on your Ratakaruta setup, but the Hard Boss modifier escalates any encounter, and the Target Timer phase event is the usual run-ender because missing the timed objective hides the reward chest.

Which characters and Ratakaruta are strongest?+

Community rankings put Barrier Swell MP regeneration, Chilly Challenge strength above 75% HP, Autocharge+ MP recovery near Shocked enemies and Whirlwind Strike critical chance on normal attacks at the top of the Ratakaruta pool. Among characters, Keroronpa is the loudest support pick, Nyandola bursts single targets as an assassin, Mimizukyun locks on from range as a sniper and Harigittan anchors a defensive line. Balance patches move these values, so confirm the tier list after every update before you commit resources.

How does Ratatan multiplayer work?+

Open the multiplayer menu, choose friend matchmaking and share the room code, or skip the code on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by using that platform's own invitation feature. Cross-play covers Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, with PlayStation 5 cross-play planned. Console play needs Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or a Game Pass tier with online multiplayer. There is no local split-screen, and Welcome Mode is disabled once a second player joins.

What should I upgrade first at the Ratatan Dock?+

Adventure upgrades at the Ratatan Dock and the Support Desk come first because they are the difference between a wall and a clear when you keep dying on the same stage. Cosmetics can wait. After that, raise your Oath Level each time you want to reach the next episode, and spend Goddess's Lottery pulls deliberately because from Episode 3 onward the altar pools change. Bank Goodie Gate pickups and use suspend saves carefully, since 1.0 fixed cases where already-collected items could be re-obtained after resuming.

Which platforms can play Ratatan and does progress carry over?+

The 1.0 release launched on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, with versions for the original Nintendo Switch and for GOG in preparation. Early Access save data continues to work in the full release, and requirements you already completed during Early Access retroactively unlock the matching achievements. On consoles, online play requires the platform subscription, and multiplayer progress still saves to each player's own save file rather than a shared host save.
