Introduction

Ratakaruta are the roguelike modifiers that define a Ratatan run, and a build is really a statement about which three Elemental Forces you are willing to commit to. Hold two Ratakaruta of the same element and you gain that element's Force effect, and you can keep a maximum of three active Forces out of the six available, which turns every pickup into a trade-off. Fire leans into burn scaling and HP thresholds, Water keeps barriers and MP flowing, Ice trades survivability for burst, Poison stacks debuffs, Lightning turns Shock into sustain and Wind scales critical hits. Layered on top are Hustle Techs, normal attack modifiers and FEVER MODE, which triggers when the party stays on beat and swaps the background music as your Cobun dance into a flurry.

Build Archetypes

S

Lightning Sustain

active

The most consistent Elemental Force for long climbs

CoreZap Strike and Hustle Zap apply Shock, and Autocharge+ converts Shock into MP recovery so resource flow stops being the limit.
SupportBolt Boomer adds extra lightning bolt triggers, which raises both damage and Shock uptime through a phase.
PlaystyleHold position through telegraphed patterns and use the recovered MP to keep re-issuing commands instead of retreating to recover.
S

Water Barrier

Barrier scaling and MP regeneration behind a shield

CoreBarrier Swell regenerates MP behind a barrier, while Splash Barrier applies at battle start and Splash Barrier+ raises barrier strength.
SupportWhirlpool Shield and Raindrop Hop water orbs extend the defensive layer across more of an encounter.
PlaystyleBest in co-op and long boss fights where surviving one more phase matters more than a damage spike.
A

Wind Critical

Critical hit scaling built around normal attacks

CoreWhirlwind Strike adds critical chance to normal attacks and Hurricane Combo adds critical damage on top of it.
SupportKnockback Crusher and Hurricane Havoc trade Cobun critical hits for crowd control and burst windows.
PlaystyleRewards staying on the offensive, so pair it with a defensive character if the difficulty punishes greed.
A

Ice Threshold

Survivability that converts into burst

CoreChilly Challenge grants strength while above 75% HP and Macho Minuet raises max HP for each boss defeated.
SupportFrigid Fury adds bonus damage against Frozen enemies and Shatter Smash provides finishers.
PlaystyleDemands disciplined positioning, because dropping below the HP threshold quietly turns off your main bonus.
B

Fire Threshold

Burn scaling and low-HP aggression for risky play

CoreBig Booms explosions and Spicy Guts attack scaling as HP drops reward staying dangerous at low health.
SupportSpicy Guard adds damage reduction below half HP and Burning Dread forces enemies to flee.
PlaystyleBest on a defensive character who can hold the threshold without dying to the first boss phase.
B

Poison Stacking

Debuff pressure for long fights and farming

CorePoison Punch and Toxic Hustle apply poison through normal attacks and Hustle Techs respectively.
SupportToxic Curse slows enemy movement while Toxic Corruption reduces their defence across the fight.
PlaystyleShines against tanky targets and slow bosses, but underperforms in short burst-damage windows. Pair it with a barrier effect so the low-health bonus does not quietly turn into a wipe during a long boss phase.

Core Mechanics

A build in Ratatan has three layers that interact. The first is your Elemental Force lineup: two Ratakaruta of the same element activate that Force, and the three-Force cap means a focused two or three element plan beats a scattered collection. The second is your attack profile, because many effects only pay out through a specific channel. Whirlwind Strike adds critical chance to normal attacks, Hustle Zap applies Shock through Hustle Techs, and Poison Punch applies poison specifically through ordinary attacks, so a build has to decide whether it is a normal attack build, a Hustle Tech build or a hybrid. The third layer is FEVER MODE, which triggers when the party keeps to the beat and dynamically swaps the music as your Cobun launch into a dance flurry. If the whole co-op party hits it together the effect is bigger, and the Super Fever Skill is the high-impact ability tied to that state.

Advantages

Build variety is where Ratatan earns its roguelike label, because the same character and weapon can play completely differently depending on which three Forces you hold. That makes experimentation cheap in the way that matters: Ratakaruta reset between runs, so a failed build costs a run rather than an account. The design also rewards understanding over luck, since effects are grouped by channel and a careful reader can assemble a coherent plan from the pickup pool instead of hoping for one lucky roll. Sustain-oriented builds in particular change what content is available to you, because Water and Lightning effects that convert barriers or Shock into MP let you keep fighting through phases that would otherwise end in a damage race you cannot win.

Challenges

The three-Force cap is also the main source of frustration, because it means a strong run sometimes passes up genuinely good pickups to preserve an element pairing. Several effects are conditional in ways that punish sloppy play: Spicy Guts scales as HP drops, Chilly Challenge only pays while you are above 75% HP, and Frigid Fury needs Frozen targets, so a build can be theoretically excellent and practically inconsistent if you cannot hold its condition. FEVER MODE adds another dependency, since a party that drifts off beat loses the state that makes Cobun flurries and Super Fever Skill timing matter. And because balance patches have corrected Ratakaruta behaviour, a build copied from an older guide may not function the way it is described.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best build in Ratatan?+
There is no single best build, but the most consistent plans commit to Lightning plus one sustain element. Lightning is popular because Zap Strike and Hustle Zap apply Shock and Autocharge+ converts Shock into MP recovery, which keeps you fighting through long phases rather than stalling out. Pair it with Water for barrier and MP effects such as Barrier Swell, or with Wind if you want critical scaling through Whirlwind Strike and Hurricane Combo. Commit to two or three elements rather than five, because Elemental Force caps at three active effects.
How do I trigger FEVER MODE and the Super Fever Skill?+
FEVER MODE triggers when the party keeps to the beat across a sustained stretch, which swaps the background music and sends your Cobun into a dance flurry. In co-op the whole party hitting it together produces a bigger effect, so groups should treat staying on beat as a shared objective rather than an individual flourish. The Super Fever Skill is the high-impact ability tied to that state. Note that v1.1.9 fixed an issue where using it in Advance Mode incorrectly decreased MP, so if you are on an older build expect different behaviour.
Do Ratakaruta persist between runs?+
No, Ratakaruta reset between runs, which is what makes them a roguelike layer rather than a permanent progression system. What persists is everything at the Ratatan Dock and Support Desk, your weapons and their Decorune, and your Oath Level. That split is why build experimentation is cheap and worth doing: you can try a different Force lineup on a fresh run without losing account progress, then bank the tokens you earned into permanent upgrades once the run ends.

Quick Tips

💡

Pick your three Forces before the first pickup. Because Elemental Force caps at three active effects, deciding your elements early stops you from collecting incompatible Ratakaruta that later have to be abandoned. A committed two or three element plan beats a scattered collection in every difficulty bracket. Two committed elements plus one defensive pick usually clears harder content than three scattered ones that never line up.

💡

Match effects to your attack channel. Many picks only pay out through normal attacks or through Hustle Techs. Whirlwind Strike adds critical chance to normal attacks, Hustle Zap applies Shock through Hustle Techs, and Poison Punch applies poison through ordinary attacks, so read the channel before adding an effect to your plan.

💡

Treat sustain as damage. MP recovery through Autocharge+, Barrier Swell or Thunder Recovery keeps you in the fight for the phases where a pure damage build would already be out of resources. Over a full climb, staying alive through one more phase usually beats a higher damage number you never get to use.
